Small Choices, Real Impact

You don't need to overhaul your life to help slow global warming. Estimates put clothing and footwear at roughly 2% to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and the way we buy, use, and dispose of products shapes that footprint. Here are five ways to shrink yours.

1. Buy less, buy better

   The lowest-impact product is the one you never have to replace. Experts estimate that doubling the lifespan of clothing could cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 44%.

2. Look for recycled materials

   Recycled fibers can carry a lighter footprint than virgin ones. One peer-reviewed assessment of a recycled polyester fiber found up to 42% lower greenhouse gas emissions than virgin polyester. Results vary by fiber and process, so check labels and ask how things are made.

3. Replace single-use with reusable, then actually reuse it

   A UK government study found that a bag's climate impact depends mostly on how many times it's used. Some reusable types need many uses to beat a single-use bag. Keep your tote by the door and put it to work.

4. Wear it longer

   Keeping clothes in active use for just nine extra months could cut their carbon, water, and waste footprints by around 20% to 30% each. Wash gently, mend, and re-wear.

5. Plan for the end of life

   In the U.S., 17 million tons of textiles were generated in 2018 and 11.3 million tons were landfilled, while only 14.7% was recycled. Resell, donate, repurpose, or recycle so materials keep circulating.
