Description

Vintage pattern illustration. Digitally enhanced from our own 19th Century Grammar of Ornament book by Owen Jones.

“Persian No. 2” is a prominent chromolithograph plate (often Plate XLV) from Owen Jones‘s seminal 1856 work, The Grammar of Ornament. It showcases intricate 16th and 17th-century Persian decorative motifs, featuring detailed floral and geometric patterns typical of Islamic art, reproduced using advanced color lithography. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
The plate, like others in the book, was created using multiple lithographic stones to achieve high-quality, vibrant colors. It was a key part of Jones’s mission to provide a universal “grammar” of design for architects and artists.

Soft, airy and full of wanderlust. Light and quick-drying, it slips into a tote or roll-up bag and becomes a towel, sarong, picnic blanket, or lightweight throw for cooler evenings. Knotted tassels trim the edges, adding handcrafted charm and movement when the ocean breeze catches it. Lay it down, wrap up in it, or drape it over a chair — it’s the kind of piece that turns small moments into little rituals of color and calm.
